When I first got started in this industry 4 years ago, I was clueless on how to recruit people in my business. I mean, I did EXACTLY what my upline told me to do. I was told to buy leads and to call them. It was also explained to me that this was not cold calling because they were expecting my call. I call them, I read a script, they enroll on the spot, and I made money. Sounded pretty darn simple.
So, I did what I was told. I purchased expensive network marketing leads and took a day off from work and I spent all day calling them.
Since I bought these leads from a lead broker, these leads were given to many other people. So, the problem was that me and the rest of the world was calling them also, so most of the time I got yelled at, or hung up on, but some did talk to me. Now the ones that did actually talk to me, well, some just wanted a job, some asked why should they have to pay to work, and some actually listened to my 30 minute script! But, most of them didn’t sign up into my network marketing internet business and not one signed up in my business on the spot.
Why the heck was I doing wrong? I did recruit a couple people, but I failed them because I couldn’t explain how I even got them in the business. I think it was just dumb luck I was able to sponsor the people that I had. At the time I just didn’t understand why people join home based businesses.
Over the years, I learned what I had wrong when making these calls. During the conversation with the prospect, I focused on talking about the wrong thing. I explained my company, my comp plan, the product, but that was the wrong thing to do! Let me clarify some things.
Why people don’t join you in your network marketing internet business
- You have got a killer product or service
- You have the BEST compensation plan
- You claim that you have the best training for recruiting people
- They simply like the business

- They believe that they can do it
- They have a need or want for the business
Do you see where I went wrong?
When talking to the prospect I focused on the wrong things…that being my company. My focus should have been on them, the prospect.
Ask them personal questions, like:
- Why do you want a home based business?
- Are you married?
- Do you have kids?
- What do you do now?
Ask questions and get to know them. If you have similarities than talk about them – this builds trust!
Why ask these questions? Because it is these questions that build the rapport, which builds trust and people will only buy from you if they trust you!
